Tow truck war bust nets murder, attempted murder, conspiracy charges

作者:admin 2020-05-28

A far-reaching investigation into the bloody conflict between rival GTA tow truck operators has ended in numerous arrests and charges including murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Started in February, Project Platinum saw York Regional Police, working alongside officers from the OPP, Toronto Police and Canada Revenue Agency, target an ongoing turf war among Greater Toronto Area tow operators — battling in the lucrative trade of fraudulent accident insurance claims, as well as staged crashes carried out by drivers intentionally causing major collisions in and around Toronto.

York Supt. Mike Slack blamed Ontario’s unregulated towing industry with the recent rise in criminality.

“Organized crime begins with an opportunity to make money, and a level of greed that leads to criminality and violence,” he said.

“The towing industry, and its lack of regulations, have led to exactly that environment.”
