AG insists COVID-19 not a get out of jail free card for violent cons

COVID-19 hasn’t opened  the jail-house floodgates for violent criminals, Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey insisted Tuesday.

Downey and Frank Addario, a former president of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, disputed defence lawyer Ari Goldkind’s statement last week that COVID-19 was a get out of jail free card for violent cons seeking bail across Ontario.

Goldkind told a Zoom podcast, Fight Back, hosted by broadcaster Libby Znaimer that he represented 30 to 40 accused criminals who were released and that even those facing serious charges “just south of first-degree murder” were being freed.

Speaking on the same podcast Tuesday, Downey and Addario contended the bail system is working — albeit remotely, mostly phone and video across the province.

“The justice system has advanced technologically 25 years in the past 25 days and taxpayers and the public will enjoy those benefits in the future,” Downey told the podcast.
